Chapter Twenty-one
4.22 p.m., Friday, 7th August
Molly’s eyelids drooped and she leaned heavily against a pillar, her sister’s bag and jacket bunched in her arms as her sister tried on yet another outfit. Where did the woman get the energy? This was the third boutique Laura had dragged her into, and Molly’s late night was beginning to catch up on her. She was going back to the hotel for a nap and as soon as Laura came out of the changing room, she’d tell her so. It would be a relief to get away from her sister’s constant probing. Molly had tried to fob her off, saying that she and Luke had just chatted about old times, his wife, Declan, and their impending marriage. Laura hadn’t swallowed any of it. Molly thought all her attention had been on Gerard, but it seemed she’d managed to keep an eye on her sister and come to her own conclusions.
‘He couldn’t take his eyes off you! And as for you, you positively lit up when you saw him,’ she’d said excitedly.
Molly thought this was an exaggeration. She was sure she’d played it cool, despite the fact that her stomach had been doing somersaults and her heart was thumping in her chest. The one plus about shopping was that, for the moment, Laura was more interested in clothes than her sister’s love life. But Molly knew that the grilling would resume once they were back on the street; another excellent reason to return to the hotel for a siesta.
‘What do you think?’ The curtain swished back and Laura stepped out, turning this way and that to examine her image in the mirrored wall.
Molly forced her eyes open and then blinked rapidly as her weary brain tried to compute her sister’s appearance.
‘What?’ Laura demanded, looking defensive.
Molly searched for a diplomatic way of telling her sister that she looked like a slapper. ‘It’s different,’ she offered. The dress was a low-cut, tight, silky number, and the part that covered her breasts was practically transparent.
‘It’s time for a change. Penny says I dress too old for my age.’
Molly secretly agreed with ‘Penny’, but this was definitely not a step in the right direction. ‘Change is good,’ she agreed, nodding, ‘but this dress really doesn’t suit you.’
Laura twisted and turned in front of the mirror. ‘It would probably look better without a bra.’
Molly laughed. ‘Without a bra, it’ll look like a negligee, and one that may well give Robert a heart attack.’
‘Then maybe I should buy it,’ Laura muttered, retreating into the changing room.
Molly stared after her, wondering if Laura was messing around with other men because there was something more serious wrong with her marriage; maybe she and Robert were having problems. How sad it would be if they split up, for the twins, at least. Ash, especially, would be devastated if the dad she so obviously adored, left and she had to stay with Laura. Conflict was quite common between mothers and daughters during the teenage years
